When should you redesign your website?

When should you redesign your website?

Redesign when the current website creates a meaningful barrier that targeted improvements cannot reasonably solve. Age or a new visual trend alone is not a sufficient reason.

Identify the barrier

Look for repeated buyer confusion, difficult editing, inaccessible journeys or a platform that prevents required changes. Connect each concern to a task and an observable consequence.

Separate presentation from architecture

Unclear copy or navigation may need focused work rather than a new platform. Unsupported dependencies or a broken content model may justify deeper change.

Preserve useful destinations

Inventory pages that visitors use and links that point to the site. Decide what each destination will become before removing or renaming it.

Define a better outcome

Write acceptance criteria for content, editing and customer journeys. After launch, compare the relevant evidence with the baseline rather than treating the new appearance as proof of success.
