Ecommerce

Understand the work behind a connected store.

Guides to ecommerce integrations and migration planning. Follow orders, inventory and customer information beyond the storefront.

Follow the order beyond the checkout button.

A store is part of a larger business process. Product information, stock, payments, fulfilment, customer records and finance may sit in different systems. Before choosing an integration or migration tool, map how an order moves between them and what staff do when the numbers disagree. That picture reveals the data and decisions the new platform must preserve.

Work through the connected-store decisions.

These guides cover the two changes that usually reveal hidden complexity: connecting systems and moving platforms.

Plan record ownership

Decide which system creates each identifier, which can change a field and how stock or order status is reconciled. Build retries and exception review around those rules rather than assuming every API call succeeds.

Prepare a migration

Inventory products, customers, order history, URLs and integrations. Map fields and permissions, rehearse the transfer and decide what the old store must still provide after cutover.

Check the platform fit

Hosted and self-managed commerce platforms carry different limits and operating duties. Compare the real catalog, markets, checkout requirements and team capacity before choosing a destination.

Questions that prevent expensive surprises.

Which team owns product and customer data? Can old account credentials or historical orders be moved lawfully and technically, or is a new sign-in journey needed? What happens to orders placed during cutover? Are payment methods, taxes, shipping rules and returns policies approved for the target markets? Provider charges and extension licenses belong in the total operating estimate.

Rehearse the customer and staff journeys.

Before launch, check discovery, product detail, cart, payment outcome, confirmation and order handoff with representative data. Test error states, duplicate messages and delayed updates; staff need a clear way to reconcile exceptions. A cutover plan should assign owners and rollback conditions. The quality of a commerce change is measured by whether trading and fulfilment remain understandable after the new storefront appears.

Questions before we start.

Can we move an ecommerce store without losing search visibility?

No migration can guarantee unchanged visibility. Inventory valuable pages and URLs, map relevant redirects, retain useful information and monitor indexing after launch. Search signals are one part of a migration alongside orders, customer access and operational data.

Do we need real-time synchronization between every system?

Not always. Decide which facts must be current for a purchase and which can be exchanged later with visible status and reconciliation. The right timing depends on business risk, provider limits and how staff resolve a mismatch.
