Joomla migration & upgrades

Plan the Joomla upgrade before changing the live site.

Joomla migration and upgrade work with extensions, templates and content checked together. Establish a supported path and rehearse it on a separate copy.

An upgrade begins with what the site depends on.

A Joomla version change may affect templates, extensions, custom code, content and the people who publish it. We first inventory the installation, identify unsupported components and map the journeys that must keep working. That makes it possible to choose an upgrade path or a wider migration with its risks visible. A copied site that starts successfully is not enough if forms, accounts or editorial work break after traffic changes.

Rehearse the move before a live cutover.

The plan is based on the current version, extensions, hosting and content rather than a generic upgrade checklist.

Inventory and dependency review

List the Joomla core version, template, extensions, customizations, integrations and important content. Identify support status and any component that requires a replacement or separate workstream.

Target rehearsal

Build a separate copy, move representative data and test publishing, forms, permissions, search paths and integrations. Record what changes and who approves each exception before the cutover window.

Cutover and rollback

Map changed URLs, prepare backups and set checks for the public site after traffic moves. Agree a rollback trigger and how new data would be handled if the original site must be restored.

Some extensions need a business decision.

An unsupported extension may have no compatible replacement, and a custom feature may need redevelopment. We explain the effect on user journeys, licensing, content and schedule before removing it. Historical data cleanup, paid plugins and content rewrites are separate scope choices. Search visibility cannot be guaranteed through a migration, but relevant redirects and public-page checks can reduce avoidable mistakes.

Check the tasks, not just the version number.

Editors should test a real publishing task; customers should be able to complete their important journeys; operators need to see the deployment and recovery steps. We record the checks against the agreed baseline and repeat them after launch. A failing path is investigated before the old environment is retired. This turns an upgrade from a one-time package update into a controlled service change.

Leave a supported path for the next change.

The organization retains provider accounts, source assets and an inventory of installed components. We document the new baseline, known exceptions and update responsibilities. Continuing maintenance, hosting and provider subscriptions are agreed separately. If the current installation is too fragile for a direct upgrade, we say so before committing to a route.

Questions before we start.

Can every Joomla site be upgraded in place?

No. The installed version, custom code, extensions and hosting determine the path. We inspect compatibility and rehearse a representative target before deciding whether an in-place upgrade or migration is responsible.

What happens to existing URLs?

We inventory important pages and map moved content to relevant destinations. Redirects, canonical pages, navigation and the sitemap are checked around cutover; search-engine processing remains outside any guaranteed timetable.
